Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus

This morning, as I was getting ready for an assessment with a clinic, my mind was full and busy…

I was thinking about my health, the appointment ahead, all the practical things that needed to be considered, and more. My thoughts were centred on my own circumstances, trying to work everything out and carry it all.

Then something unexpected happened.

As I was cleaning my teeth, my Alexa suddenly started playing music.

The song that came on was Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus.

I had been playing that song yesterday but this morning I hadn’t put any music on. At that moment, I wasn’t using my phone or my iPad. I hadn’t asked Alexa to play anything. I wasn’t even speaking. I still don’t know how it activated.

Perhaps there was an ordinary technical explanation, but it felt like the Holy Spirit was gently interrupting my morning.

Whatever was going on, I could sense Jesus breaking into my busy thoughts with a simple invitation:

“Turn your eyes on Me.”

It was as though He was saying, “You’ve been looking at all the things you’re carrying. You’ve been trying to figure everything out. But lift your eyes and look at Me instead.”

How easily our minds become consumed by the things going on in our lives—our health, our finances, our relationships, our unanswered questions, our responsibilities. None of those things are unimportant, but when they become the centre of our attention, they can begin to steal our peace.

Jesus offers something different.

He doesn’t always give us immediate answers, but He does offer His presence. He offers rest. He invites us to stop striving for a moment and simply look at Him.

This has been a recurring theme in what I feel the Lord has been speaking to me recently. Again and again, He reminds me that I don’t have to carry everything myself. He wants to take care of me. He wants me to rest in Him rather than exhaust myself trying to solve every problem in my own strength.

The words of Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus capture it beautifully:

“Turn your eyes upon Jesus,

Look full in His wonderful face,

And the things of earth will grow strangely dim,

In the light of His glory and grace”

Our circumstances don’t necessarily disappear… but when our gaze shifts to Jesus, our perspective changes.

Today, that unexpected song was a gentle reminder that before I try to figure everything out, I can simply look at Him.

And perhaps that’s an invitation for all of us today.

Wherever your mind has been fixed recently—whatever burden you’ve been carrying—take a moment to turn your eyes upon Jesus.

He is already carrying what you’ve been trying to carry alone.
